Pelagic methane sink enhanced by benthic methanotrophs ejected from a gas seep

چکیده
Abstract Cold seeps represent hot spots of seabed‐derived methane emissions to the water column, where physical and biological barriers regulate transport atmosphere. In our study, we used a point source in North Sea investigate water‐column dynamics within dispersing plumes. The study is based on concentration, distribution activity methane‐oxidizing bacteria (MOB), oceanographic observations. Our findings suggest ejection benthic MOB into column by sediment resuspension gas‐bubble‐mediated transport. An applied particle‐tracking model demonstrated that 4.29 ± 1.9 × 10 12 cells s −1 from seep site would produce abundance detected down‐current body. inoculant accelerated oxidation rates factor five. highlights importance bentho‐pelagic microorganisms at sites their feedback pelagic sink.

Methane-Oxidizing Bacteria Shunt Carbon to Microbial Mats at a Marine Hydrocarbon Seep
The marine subsurface is a reservoir of the greenhouse gas methane. While microorganisms living in water column and seafloor ecosystems are known to be a major sink limiting net methane transport from the marine subsurface to the atmosphere, few studies have assessed the flow of methane-derived carbon through the benthic mat communities that line the seafloor on the continental shelf where meth...
متن کاملEnhanced Gas Drainage from Undersaturated Coalbed Methane Reservoirs
Traditional methods of coal seam gas drainage rely on the use of reservoir pressure reduction to promote gas desorption from the coal matrix. Studies in coal mining gas drainage operations, particularly in coal seams that are deeply undersaturated and have low permeability, found the rate of reservoir pressure reduction was prohibitively slow. In such conditions, lengthy production delays have ...
متن کاملMethane emission and consumption at a North Sea gas seep (Tommeliten area)
The Tommeliten seepage area is part of the Greater Ekofisk area, which is situated above the Tommeliten Delta salt diapir in the central North Sea (5629.90 N, 259.80 E, Norwegian Block 1/9, 75 m water depth). Here, cracks in a buried marl horizon allow methane to migrate into overlying clay-silt and sandy sediments. Hydroacoustic sediment echosounding showed several venting spots coinciding wit...
متن کاملParticulate methane monooxygenase genes in methanotrophs.
A 45-kDa membrane polypeptide that is associated with activity of the particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) has been purified from three methanotrophic bacteria, and the N-terminal amino acid sequence was found to be identical in 17 of 20 positions for all three polypeptides and identical in 14 of 20 positions for the N terminus of AmoB, the 43-kDa subunit of ammonia monooxygenase. DNA from ...
متن کاملAnaerobic methane oxidation in low-organic content methane seep sediments
Sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is the key sedimentary microbial process limiting methane emissions from marine sediments and methane seeps. In this study, we investigate how the presence of low-organic content sediment influences the capacity and efficiency of AOM at Bullseye vent, a gas hydrate-bearing cold seep offshore of Vancouver Island, Canada. The upper 8 m of sed...
